M.J. Bale stylist David Bonney lays out four essential rules for achieving cool this season in cotton and linen suits.
A cotton suit should be crisp enough to dial up with a shirt, tie and loafers for a spring event, but also chill enough to work with a T-shirt and sneakers for sunset drinks.
You can wear your polo shirt collar outside the jacket for a sharp ’50s vibe, but don’t stray into the ’70s by trying that with a regular shirt collar. Verboten.
Your linen suit will start to crease as soon as you put it on; that’s part of the insouciance of linen suits. Get it tidy before you walk out the door, then forget about it.
We know a white -T-shirt looks great under the right suit (especially cotton and linen) but try a clean white tank instead of a tee for a more confident summer fit. Note: your gnarly gym singlet needn’t apply.
