A menswear essential since prehistoric humans first learnt to weave then stitch animal fleece and flax, knitwear has served a crucial role in the winter wardrobe for over three millennia. With barbaric temps ready at the gates, here’s our guide to staying warm in this winter’s essential knits.
Long before activewear, there was the sporty crewneck knit: from the nautical guernsey worn by Irish fishermen and patterned Fair Isle sweaters of northern Scotland, to the ‘sweatshirt’ associated with collegiate field sports. Wear with a t-shirt or button-up shirt, ensuring the shirt collars pass neatly under the neckline.
When worn snug against the body under a jacket or coat, the V-neck makes for a warm and comfortable winter layer, particular on the morning/evening commute. Its angled neckline frames a shirt and tie nicely. To wear it over a shirt or tee, opt for a looser, more relaxed fit.
The cold weather sibling of the spring-summer polo, the collared knit is a more casual but preppy sweater option that hit peak popularity on 1950s Ivy League campuses. Wear it with jeans, chinos or trousers, and definitely under a blazer for a more insouciant take on style. Wear with one button or all buttons done up, never two.
