Fibre History

Cotton has been used in the construction of tailored men's shirts since the 1700s. It superseded wool and linen as the shirtmaker's fibre of choice because of its luxurious next-of-skin feel, ensuring all-day comfort. One of the world’s oldest and most versatile natural fibres, cotton is celebrated for its exceptional softness, breathability, and enduring comfort. Its lightweight structure allows air to circulate freely, keeping the body cool and comfortable in warmer climates, while its natural strength ensures garments retain their integrity through repeated wear and washing. Cotton fibres are highly absorbent, regulating moisture with ease, and the fabric’s smooth hand-feel makes it effortless to wear against the skin. Its versatility extends across tailoring and casualwear, offering both durability and refinement in equal measure. For centuries, cotton has been woven into the fabric of daily life, valued equally for its practicality and its elegance. From ancient civilisations along the Nile and Indus Valleys to today’s ateliers, cotton has remained a fibre of both utility and beauty. Its journey—from the plant’s delicate white bolls to the finely spun yarns shaped into shirts, trousers, and tailoring—speaks to a heritage of craftsmanship and a timeless connection between nature and garment. In every thread lies a story of resilience, refinement, and an enduring place in the wardrobe of the well-dressed gentleman.
