Fabric

This garment is woven from a considered blend of European flax linen and cotton, combining the best qualities of two of the world’s most cherished natural fibres. Linen, derived from the flax plant, provides its hallmark breathability, strength, and relaxed texture, keeping the wearer cool and comfortable in warmer climates while lending the fabric a distinctive character. Cotton brings softness, resilience, and a smooth hand-feel, ensuring the fabric drapes with ease and wears beautifully against the skin.

Together, the fibres achieve a harmonious balance: the natural slub and breezy lightness of linen are complemented by the comfort and versatility of cotton. This union results in a fabric that is durable yet refined, casual yet elevated—perfect for garments designed to move seamlessly between leisure and formality. With European flax at its core, the blend also carries with it a story of heritage and sustainability, grown in the fertile soils of France and Belgium with minimal environmental impact. The result is a fabric that feels as timeless as it is modern, offering effortless sophistication with every wear.

Construction

While the term might sound like a misnomer, M.J. Bale's 'decon' technique, used in the construction of some of our jackets, is actually what it says it is: a method of tailoring to construct a garment in the most unstructured, soft and lightweight way possible. It is a sartorial technique commonly associated with Neapolitan tailoring. It means the jackets are crafted with minimal padding and internal construction, allowing the fabric to drape naturally over the body. This creates a softer, more fluid silhouette that follows the contours of the wearer without excessive stiffness or structure. With Australia's spring-summer climate mostly mirroring that of Mediterranean summers, the decon technique also helps Australian men stay cool and unflustered while being sartorially stylish.
