SPRING RACING

What To Wear to Derby Day

After two years of watching the famed Melbourne Spring Carnival in the comfort of our homes, horseracing fans and the socially proactive are no doubt warmed by this year’s reactivation of the Cup Carnival.

Of course, we know that horse racing is only one part of the Spring Carnival. Arguably, what makes the spectacle such a coveted event is the style. The who’s who of domestic and international relevance descend upon Flemington Racecourse in their best getups, and Victoria Derby Day is the day to kick it all off.

A day notorious for its strict dress code and formalities, Derby Day is defined by black and white. You won’t find a sea of navy or bursts of colour here, but rather fashion devotees doing their best to make monochromatic shades like black, white, and grey look stylish.

While the dress code for Derby Day seems straightforward, it can be surprisingly easy to get wrong. Here is a quick guide to nailing Derby Day style ahead of this year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The Suit

One of the most important factors in Derby Day’s strict dress code is its black and white theme. Don’t be that hero who decides to go against the grain and wear navy or anything with colour—it simply won’t fly, especially if you find yourself with a coveted Birdcage Pass.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “Surely I can just get away with a plain black suit.” While a black suit will, of course, suffice for the occasion, unless it is immaculately tailored to your measurements, you might want to introduce some depth to your look to mix things up.

One way to do this is by opting for a suit with a subtle pattern, such as a stripe or check. While that’s a little tricky with a plain black suit, no one said you can’t wear grey, charcoal, or even white to Derby Day. A single- or double-breasted jacket with matching trousers is a safe and stylish choice.

If you’re feeling bold, consider a three-piece suit. A white blazer in cotton or linen can also look fantastic when paired with black trousers. Above all, make sure your suit is properly tailored—you don’t want to look like you’re turning up for a court hearing at the Magistrates.

The Shirt

For Derby Day, simplicity is key. It is one of the most traditional race days when it comes to dressing, so when choosing a shirt, you can’t go wrong with classic white. It’s timeless, elegant, and always appropriate for the occasion.

For a modern touch, consider a shirt with a cutaway collar. You don’t need a French cuff for Derby Day, but this style is never a bad idea if you want to elevate your look.

Since Derby Day falls on the last weekend of October, the weather can be warm. To stay comfortable, opt for a breathable fabric like cotton.

If you’re feeling bold, an all-black ensemble can make a statement—think black shirt paired with a black suit. It’s a daring yet stylish take on Derby Day dressing.

The Accessories

Compliment your look with a tonal, low-key tie. If you’re wearing charcoal or grey, opt for a black knitted tie—it’s modern, textured, and offers a sharp contrast against lighter shades. If your suit is black, a slate grey tie can provide a subtle point of difference while still keeping within the monochrome theme.

Pocket squares are another way to break up your look in a refined, understated manner. Keep them simple and in keeping with Derby Day’s palette—think blacks, whites, charcoals, or greys. Avoid anything too bold or loud; here, less is more.
