Great Southern Fibres

From Antipodean pastures to Italian workshops: our journey to champion local natural fibres.

It’s almost 20,000 kilometres and a world apart from the rugged wilds of Tasmania and New Zealand’s South Island to Italy’s weavers and makers, but it’s a journey that transforms our historic natural fibre – Merino wool – into something far greater than the sum of its parts.

Beginning in 2026, we are expanding our farm footprint into Otago’s Alpine region, weaving garments of integrity from New Zealand Merino wool. It’s part of our evolution into a 100% natural fibres brand while championing Antipodean Merino wool globally.

From sustainable, locally grown fleece to regional Normandy linen, we seek out the world’s finest organic materials and the custodial farmers who nurture them. Through partnerships with the world’s best weavers and makers, we transform these precious fibres into garments that honour both the land and craft.

Our Kingston single-source wool program – garments made entirely from superfine Merino wool grown on Kingston farm in the Tasmanian northern Midlands – has been in effect since 2017. Kingston is run by custodial farmer Simon Cameron, who nurtures not just premium Merinos but at least a dozen threatened species of flora and fauna. He farms the former in harmony with the latter to maintain a carbon positive-accredited enterprise.

Kingston’s greasy wool travels to Piedmont, where centuries-old weaver Vitale Barberis Canonico (VBC) transforms it into luxe Super 150s navy birds eye fabric for tailored suits and jackets. Recently, we made the world’s first tailored garment from methane-reduced wool – our Mantova blazer – in Mantua, Italy, with the wool milled by VBC. Kingston sheep were fed a native red seaweed called Asparagopsis taxiformis as a diet supplement to reduce their methane output to undetectable levels.

Today we continue to expand the Kingston single-source Merino wool range with Super 150s ties made in a small workshop nestled in olive groves in Campagna, near the Amalfi Coast. In this sun-drenched atelier, surrounded by jasmine-scented gardens, craftspeople give final form to Kingston’s legacy.

A percentage of every M.J. Bale Kingston garment sale is returned to the farm to be reinvested into projects that help regenerate the environment. Because Kingston wool represents more than material excellence – it’s a testament to regenerative agriculture that heals rather than harms the land.
