Aim High, Seize the Moment
“Happy the man - and happy he alone -
He who can call today his own,
He who, secure within, can say,
‘Tomorrow do thy worst, for I have lived today’"
In 23 BC following decades of civil war the Roman poet, Horace, sat down to write a tribute to his patron. The poem, titled Odes, featured a swathe of timeless advice, of which the Latin phrase Carpe Diem — seize the day — has since become immortalised. Carpe Diem translates literally as ‘pluck the days’ and Horace was comparing life to flowers: short lasting, but joyful. His advice, therefore, was to take our lives into our own hands and appreciate each moment before it passes. True wisdom exists in the appreciation of the present hour, he advised. Don’t torment yourself with anxiety about the future. We know not what tomorrow brings.
More than 2000 years on and what has changed? The global environment is still characterised by flux and shifting anxieties. We can’t change the past. The future is still out of reach. All we can control is the present — this hour, this moment. Bring on tomorrow. “The joys I have possessed, in spite of fate, are mine,” Horace reflected. “… But what has been, has been, and I have had my hour.”
This is the spirit behind the M.J. Bale Spring 17 collection. Let’s not waste the hours of life. Let’s chance our arm. Take a risk. Aim high. Seize the moment.
We hope, in our own small way, that these are the garments to help give you the joy and confidence to make today your own.
